Irving G. Haakenson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at Rosewood Nursing Home, Fargo, ND, under the care of Hospice on June 6th.
Irving “Blitz” was born in McHenry, ND, on July 1, 1930, to Gertrude and Ingvald Haakenson. The family later moved to New Rockford, ND, where he completed his high school education. In 1952, Irving was drafted and proudly served in the US Marines during the Korean Conflict. While stationed at Camp Pendleton,â¯he was joined in marriage to the love of his life, Martha “Marty” Bohnet. After his military service, he began his employment with the railroad working for the Great Northern Railway, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad. Marty and Blitz moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1961 where they raised their family. He worked for the railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1993.⯠In 2000, they relocated to the home they built on Big Cormorant Lake, Audubon, MN.
Blitz’s construction and practical engineering skills helped him build the homes they lived in. He was able to repair or fix anything. â¯He was hard working, and his generous nature was to help anyone, anytime, no matter who they were.⯠At any time, Blitz was willing to grab a shovel or hammer and lend a hand with any project.
Blitz loved to dance with his wife, Marty. Together, they would entertain all who watched their light-footed movements. Blitz’s love of family and friends will truly be missed.
Irving is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha Bohnet; his sons, David Paulette, Greg LuJean Thomas, Nichi, Tim Eva; a daughter, Julie Mike Brunsvold; eight grandchildren, Brandee, Bree Nathan, Brady Jessica, Joseph, Brett, Jacob, Kylee, and Elizabeth; ten great grandchildren, Alexis, Tristan, Scarlet, Rohin, Harper, Rielle, Jackson, Brooks, JJ Jacob James, and Rhys.
