James L. Schulze, 89, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND. James was born on November 23, 1928 to Otto and Emma (Zarbok Melquist) Schulze in Felton, MN.
James graduated from Osakis (MN) High School in 1946, and immediately joined the U.S. Army where he served until 1948, spending 18 months in Korea. When he returned, the GI Bill allowed him to enter college. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951. James married Margaret Robertson on June 27, 1953 in Great Falls, MT. They moved to California where he was an insurance adjuster for Lloyds of London for three years. He then was employed by the European Exchange System of the U.S. government, where his assignment was in Nürnberg, Germany. James and Margaret lived in Germany for three years where their first child, Christine, was born. They moved to Minneapolis where their next two children, Warren and Andrea, were born. James continued insurance investigation for Ohio Casualty and attended law school at the same time. He received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1965, and was admitted to the Minnesota State Bar. They moved to Fergus Falls where he was in private practice with the Rufer Law Firm for 22 years, with a specialty in insurance defense litigation. He continued in private practice after moving to their home on Mann Lake (Waldheim) near Walker, MN. He later did work for the MN Arbitration Association, as a specialist in insurance.
His early years of farm life in rural Minnesota during the Great Depression formed his character and shaped his strong work ethic. Jim valued education not only for himself, but also for his children and his grandchildren, supporting their academic pursuits in all ways. He exhibited a lifelong passion for learning, travel and family adventure, including camping, canoeing, biking and skiing. Jim and Margaret traveled far and wide throughout their married life, and returned numerous times to Nürnberg. He read extensively, and shared his deep understanding of history, culture and philosophy across the ages. He also instilled the art of debate at the family table, and the love of cribbage in all who would play.
Jim will be missed deeply by his family for his intellect, his generosity and his keen sense of humor. He laid a strong family foundation upon which all will stand.
James is survived by his wife, Margaret; children, Christine Schulze, Warren (Cynthia) Schulze, and Andrea (Michael) Seifert; grandchildren, Nicholas (Ashley) Seifert, Nathanial Seifert, Katherine Schulze, Emma Seifert, and Samuel Schulze; great-grand child, Claire Seifert; sisters, Ethel Stellmach and Anita Harrang; and many other loving relatives and friends.
