Janis Marcella Softing went on her final journey February 7th 2021 at the age of 85.
Janis was born July 17, 1935 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Oscar and Agnes Bortnem. She grew up on a farm north of Audubon, with her three younger brothers, whom she adored. She attended school in Audubon where she graduated class Valedictorian. On October 24, 1953 she married Harley Softing and together they raised four children in a home they built north of Moorhead.
She spent many years helping Harley run their business, Elder’s Radio Communications. And, she never lost her love for learning, returning to college at the age of 51.
Janis had so many passions, there’s no room to list them all!
Small in stature but a ball of endless energy, she loved organizing events and socializing. A 55 year member at North Buffalo Church, she was active in WELCA and her circle group. She loved photography, bowling, sewing, music, dancing and especially traveling. She went on many adventures around this country and others with family and friends. But her biggest love was family. She was a wonderful Grandma and the best mom and friend to her kids.
Janis was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Harley, her parents Oscar and Agnes, and her three beloved brothers, Jim, Roger and Ray Bortnem.
She leaves, with thousands of beautiful memories, her four children Kim Softing (Mary), Lee Ann Nelson (Duane), Sue Voelker (Butch), Jill Carlson (Joel). Nine grandchildren, Darrin Nelson, Hollyanne Duda, Jacob Voelker, Melissa Pratt, Erik Softing, Brody Voelker, Audrey Lindberg, Andrew Softing, Summer Carlson and 5 great grandchildren along with many cherished family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at North Buffalo Church (2542 120th Ave. N., Moorhead) Friday, February 12th at 12:30 preceded by private family time at 11:00 A.M. A gathering will be held after the service at the Moorhead American Legion until 4pm.
