Jeanette Weets

November 20, 1934 — September 1, 2018

Jeanette Weets, 83, of Hawley, MN, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, in her home surrounded by loved ones.

Jeanette LaVonne, daughter of Raymond and Clara (Ness) Omberg, was born Nov. 20, 1934 at her grandparent’s homestead on Upper Cormorant Lake, Lake Park, MN.  Her maternal grandmother, Emma Ness, was the midwife.  Jeanette spent her childhood on her family farm and attended country schools through the 8th grade.  She graduated from Hawley High School in 1952. She was employed by First National Bank of Hawley following graduation.  She married Vernon B. Ulrich on Oct. 1, 1955.  They had 4 children; Verlyn, Cheryl, LouAnn and Kathy.  Jeanette was employed for many years as a waitress at the Norseman Steakhouse and Lounge in Hawley. She retired from there in the fall of 1985 when she married the love of her life, Lee Henry Weets, on October 26.  Jeanette and Lee lived on his farmstead for 14 years until he retired from farming.  They then moved into a new house on the adjacent property where Jeanette has continued to live since Lee’s passing 3½ years ago.

Jeanette truly loved her family and was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She enjoyed gardening both flowers and vegetables, preserving the produce, embroidering, writing letters and sending cards, keeping up on current events, reading novels, listening to “real” country music, using her iPad, coloring, watching soap operas and baking.  Her baked goods were loved by every family member, each one claiming their favorites.  She was an amazing family historian, keeping pictures of every single family member organized in countless albums.  Jeanette was a devoted fan of the Hawley Nugget Girls Basketball team.

Jeanette is survived by her son, Verlyn Ulrich, Wasilla, Alaska; her daughters, Cheryl (Bill) Gottenborg, Hawley, and LouAnn (Tim) Olsen, Lake Park; her step-daughter Ronda (Rick) Thorne, Malabar, Florida; her grandchildren, Tabitha (Tim) Bergman, Breanne (Cody) Marshall, Andrew (Jessica) Gottenborg, Tyler Olsen, Kyle (Amy) Weets, Megan (Brian) Tetro, Kerby Weets, and Kaitlynn (Brandon) Borgstahl; 10 great-grandchildren; Kendra, Logan and Mati Bergman, Jovie, Sienna and Henley Marshall, Willow Borgstahl, Otto Gottenborg, Tucker and Spencer Weets; her sisters-in-law, Karen Omberg of Hawley, Darlene Kohler of Detroit Lakes, Lorraine (Jim) Nelson of Fridley, Shirley McNeely of St. Louis, MO, Eileen (Gordon) Torgerud of Delano, Dorothy (Walt) Lindquist of Esko; brother-in-law, Delbert (Sue) Weets, Cloquet and several nephews, nieces and friends.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lee; parents, Raymond and Clara Omberg; her infant daughter, Kathy Vernette Ulrich; her brother Ross Omberg; and her stepson, Rodney Weets.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Lysne Lutheran Church of Hawley, or REACH.  Private family services are being planned.
