Jewell D. Wenner, age 95, of Ulen, MN, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen.
Jewell Deloris Henrickson was born on September 17, 1923, at her home in Ulen, to Elmer and Pearle Henrickson. She was the third child of four. She attended school in Hitterdal, MN from grades 1-10, where she enjoyed playing basketball with her sister, Phyllis. She then went to Hawley High School for the remainder of her schooling so she could take business classes and continue playing basketball.
After high school, she went on to business school to prepare for working for the government. Jewell and several business school classmates headed to Washington, D.C., for their first jobs during the time of WWII. Later, she transferred closer to home and started working at the Capitol in St. Paul, and then finally transferring to the Federal Building on Broadway in Fargo. Jewell said she did a lot of hitchhiking home to spend time with her family and her sweetheart, Oris Wenner. They were married on December 28, 1944.
Together, they purchased a farm in rural Hitterdal in 1946, where they resided and farmed together. Jewell worked various jobs including, American Crystal Beet Plant for 12 years, Lakes Publishing in Hawley, stocking shelves at Festival Foods, and Walmart until she was 82 years old.
Jewell was extremely proud to win the Fan of the Year award at the Hawley Public School. She loved watching her children and grandkids play softball in the summer.
Jewell is survived by one son, Rick (Evie) Wenner of Hitterdal; three daughters, Ginger (Merlyn) Petermann of Hawley, Penny (Dean) Jallo of Hawley, and Cindy Wenner of Lake Park, MN; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Myrtle (Bob) Swanson of Moorhead.
Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Oris; her parents; one brother, Elwood; and two sisters, Norma and Phyllis.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal, MN. There will be a visitation starting one hour before the funeral.
Burial will take place at 3:00 PM on Friday, May 17, 2019 at Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Hitterdal.
