John Robert Benson

John Robert Benson, 62, of Moorhead, Minnesota, passed away surrounded by his family on June 22nd, 2023, at 4:17pm.

John is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Helen Benson. He is survived by his birth mother Faye Schleter, his wife Diane Benson, and children Jordyn, Seth, and Samuel Benson. 

John was born September 5th,1960 to Faye Schleter and adopted by Robert and Helen Benson shortly after. 

He graduated from Moorhead High School and went on to study at Moorhead State University. He graduated with a minor in music and major in teaching. John went on to have different jobs that included teaching, coaching, serving his country in the U.S. Army, and serving the recovery community in direct client care.

John met his wife, Diane Benson, in 1991 and they were married July 20th, 1996, in Elizabeth, Minnesota. They shared 32 years of life together.

John was a proud father and devoted to helping his children achieve success. He enjoyed traveling, anything to do with music, sports, watching a good movie, and could not live without an ice-cold diet pop. John was an especially talented man, playing multiple sports, playing different instruments including trumpet throughout college, teaching, and coaching various youth sports including his sons Seth and Sam in hockey, and consistently picking up new hobbies and crafts over time. John was a spiritual man, a “friend of Bill”, and heavily involved in the recovery community over the years. John was loved by many for his sense of humor, creative ideas, and infectious laugh. He will be deeply missed by many.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday June 30th, 2023, from 5pm-7pm at Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead, Minnesota. Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at 2751 Walnut Circle Moorhead, Minnesota.
