John F. "Jack" Fankhanel, 77, died on October 7, 2008, in the Good Samaritan Center, Pelican Rapids, MN.John Frederick Fankhanel was born December 27, 1930, in Fargo, ND, to Katheryn Thompson Fankhanel and John Carl Fankhanel of Sabin, MN. He attended Sabin Elementary School and Moorhead High School, graduating in 1948. On December 3, 1954 Jack and Hazel Edwards were married in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. Jack became owner/operator of what later was known as Fankhanel Oil and Jack's Standard Service & C-Store in Sabin in 1954. He spent his career in the oil business from 1948 until 1989, starting as an Agent and becoming a Jobber for Amoco Oil in 1976. From Fourth Grade through Grade Twelve, Jack spent summers at his uncle's farm at Baker, MN. He always said it was a wonderful learning experience and invaluable later on in his career with Amoco Oil. Jack participated in Legion baseball and high school football. In 1951 he bowled the first sanctioned 300 in the history of Moorhead League bowling at Kossick Lanes. He was inducted into the Fargo-Moorhead Bowling Hall of Fame. Surviving are his wife, Hazel; daughters, Deborah Fankhanel of Fargo, ND and Patricia Robert Dahl, Pelican Rapids, MN; Grandchildren Natalie Chad Larsen of Fargo, Olivia Babolian, Fargo, and Christopher Dahl, Michael Dahl, Emily Dahl and Julia Dahl, all of Pelican Rapids, MN; Two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Jordan Larsen. One great-grandchild, Taylor Babolian preceded him in death in March 2003.Jack was active at the Moorhead Country Club where he began his love of golf. He and his wife wintered in Mesa, AZ for many years and he enjoyed golf and the fellowship of retirees in Sunland Village East. They enjoyed their summers at Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids, MN. For the past ten months Jack has been lovingly cared for at the Good Samaritan Center, Pelican Rapids, MN.
