John D. Finnegan, 68, of Hawley, MN, died Tuesday, January 5, 2016, in Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. John was born April 14, 1947, in Nashville, TN, to David and Rachel Bingham Finnegan. He graduated from Crete-Monee High School in Crete, IL, before continuing his education at Minnesota State University, Moorhead. On August 23, 1969, John married Karen Anderson in Frazee, MN. Together they made their home in Moorhead and John worked at Supervalu Inc. in Fargo where he would spend 32 years, and was also active in the Local Teamsters Union. In 1977, they moved to Hawley and John completed his accounting degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1987 and started Finnegan’s Tax and Accounting and served his clients until his death.
John enjoyed staying active in camping and was very involved with Boy Scouts. Over the years, he served as Cub and Scout Master, and was later made Honorary Eagle Scout by the local troop. He also enjoyed documentaries, history and old war and western movies.
John is survived by his wife, Karen; children, Daniel Stephanie of Osakis, MN, David Ashley of Edina, MN, Colleen “Amy” Michael Ludwikowski of Minneota, MN, Kathleen Chris Steidl of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Kaitlyn and Gabriel Ludwikowski, Makayla, Thomas and Jacob Finnegan; and siblings, James Peggy, Joe Patti, Margaret Fritz Behr and Virginia Rob Weiner Finnegan. Six nephews and seven nieces.
Memorials preferred to Hawley Police Auxiliary, Lysne Lutheran Church, or HLS Parish Center.
Memorial Gathering will be Thursday, January 7, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.
Memorial Service will be Friday, January 8, at 2:00 p.m., in Lysne Lutheran Church, rural Hawley, MN.
