John R. Seter

February 5, 1946 — November 30, 2023

John Richards Seter, 77, of Pelican Rapids, MN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND.

John Richards Seter was born on February 5, 1946, to Lloyd and Violet (Richards) Seter in Glyndon, MN. He attended Glyndon School until graduation and was active in football and basketball. He was awarded the Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1964.

He married his high school sweetheart, Linda Sunde, on January 27, 1967, at Glyndon Lutheran Church. They made their home in the Glyndon area where his three children were born, and his love of agriculture began. He farmed for Glyndon Farms, drove diesel truck for Sam Seter and was a private contractor, driving bus for the Glyndon School District. He was active in Jaycees and helped with many Jaycee wrestling tournaments, even coaching his nephew, Trent.

In 1977, they moved to Lake Park, MN where he continued to farm for the next 8 years. Many weekends were spent at horse shows with dear family friends, Wayne & Shirley Springer and Bill & Linda Rosenfeldt. Dad looked forward to these weekends and were some of his most favorite memories.

In 1985, they moved to Pelican Rapids, while he started CMI in Rothsay, MN with Dan Larson, sandblasting, selling grain dryers and grain leg systems. While their home was destroyed by fire shortly after moving in, they were able to rebuild a home with the help of Wally Seter. Many great times were had there with his children, grandchildren, family, and friends. Eventually they were able to build their dream home on Ranum Lake between Pelican Rapids, MN and Barnesville, MN. He was so proud of their homes and loved getting family and friends together and entertaining.

In 1993, he started working for Conagra Foods. He spent 3 years in Russia/India setting up potato farms. During this time, his first grandchild was born, whom he was not able to see until he was 1.

Upon returning from Russia, he began working for R.D Offutt Co. as a farm manager on the Wadena, MN and Perham, MN Farms until he retired.

In 2018 he moved, with his wife, to Kindred, ND where he enjoyed many new friends at coffee hour, eggs and hashbrowns at the café, trips to True Value, the bank, and the Braaten farm, Kindred sports, and visiting with special friends Evan and Marie Moe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Violet (Richards) Seter; brother, Lloyd Seter Jr.; brother-in-law Larry Brandt; sister-in-law, Sharilyn Seter; Dan Cotrell; and nephew, Ace Brandt

He is survived by his wife, Linda Seter; daughters, Teresa (David) Braaten of Kindred, ND; Tara (Eric) Bechtold of Huntley, MT; son, Troy (Charla) Seter of Pelican Rapids, MN; grandchildren, Riley Braaten of West Fargo, ND; Alec Braaten of Kindred, ND; Victoria Braaten of Bozeman, MT; Gunnar Braaten of Minneapolis, MN; Olivia Bechtold of Bozeman, MT; Cole Bechtold of Huntley, MT; Emma Seter of Pelican Rapids, MN, and Brody Seter of Pelican Rapids, MN; sister, Karen (Ron) Offutt of Fargo, ND; brother, Terry Seter of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Jeanene Seter of Glyndon, MN; Laurelle Cottrell of Park Rapids, MN and many nieces and nephews.

A very special Thank You to Cindy Zink and Tara Welter for helping with the care of our dad. He looked forward to seeing them and they made his life brighter.
