John N. Young, Jr., 80, of Hawley, MN, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, in the VA Medical Center, Fargo, ND. John was born March 30, 1936, in Barnesville, MN, to John Sr. and Alma Nelson Young. He grew up in Rollag, MN, and attended District 3 country school before moving to Hawley and graduating in 1954. John continued his education at NDSU and worked at T.F. Powers where he received his apprenticeship in masonry. On May 4, 1956, he married Betty Thompson. John served in the U.S. Army from 1958 – 1960. When he returned, they made their home in Rollag for a time before moving to Hawley in the early 1970’s. John continued his career as a mason and over the years became very involved in the community, state and national organizations. Among the many recognitions John received, he was proud to be named Ambassador for the League of MN Cities, where he was rewarded the C.C. Ludwig Leadership Award. He was also a U.S. Jaycees Ambassador and took pride in serving several years on the City of Hawley council as wells as various state and county organizations. He enjoyed his time outdoors and was a lifetime member of the MN Deer Hunters Association. He also enjoyed bowling and was later inducted into the MN State Bowling Hall of Fame. John loved supporting Hawley Athletics and spent 40 years on the “Chain Gang” during the football season. But above all, John loved his time with his family. He will be dearly missed.
John is survived by his daughters, Brenda Anderson of Hawley, MN, Cindy Mike Schenck of Hawley, MN; grandchildren, Nichole Brian McCarthy, Travis Megan Schenck, Aaron Schenck and Jeremy Schenck; twin great-grandsons on the way; brother, Nolan Bea Young of Hawley, MN; sister, Carolyn “Sue” Dave Christensen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; and his parents.
Visitation: Sunday, June 12, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., in Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN.
Funeral: Monday, June 13, at 2:00 p.m., in Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN.
Interment: Hawley Cemetery
