Jon Reed Tollefson

Life as we know it on this earth came to an end for Jon Reed Tollefson, 67, on October 18, 2022, at Essentia Hospital, surrounded by many family and friends. He is now blessed with the promise of life eternal.

Jon was born on October 14, 1955, to Donald and Crystal (Severson) Tollefson in Fargo, ND. He was baptized, confirmed, and a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN.

Jon attended and graduated from Moorhead High School, before attending and graduating from UND with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He worked as a CPA for many years, most recently for Thibedeau and Company. He met the love of his life, Mary McCleery, on January 21, 2010, and they made their home in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Jon had many interests, including his alma mater, UND hockey, Donkey Kong, finding a good deal, bonfires, and sports of varied kinds. His favorite would have his basis in Minnesota lake country and his own home in Detroit Lakes on Big Detroit. He was his happiest being in, or on the water where he could water ski or help someone else learn how, making lake fun available to others. He also enjoyed downhill skiing, volunteering at D.L. Mountain, and working out at the gym.

The love he had for family and friends was long lasting, real, and included many, young and old. As so many can attest to, his generosity was a big part of his expression to each one as well as his ability and willingness to lend a helping hand in problem solving for others. He was well loved, fiercely loyal, and always ready to remember the good times with just the right song.

His Christian faith was strong and a meaningful part of his life. He was a man of deep faith and most recently attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.

All who knew Jon are mourning the loss of a caring, kind, big hearted, and loyal friend. Jon was a devoted son to Crystal and a loving and devoted partner to his fiancé Mary.

Jon is survived by his mother, Crystal Utke; fiancé, Mary McCleery; siblings, Blair Tollefson, Jill (Steve) Swantz, and James (Bethany) Tollefson; Mary’s son, John McCleery; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Donald; grandparents, Jewell and Hazel Severson, and Tom and Alice Tollefson; and step-father, Reinie Utke. Also, his beloved cat, China.

Visitation will be from noon to 2:00 P.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 210 Seventh Street South, Moorhead, MN, in the Christian Life Center, followed by the memorial service at 2:00 P.M. in the Sanctuary at Trinity Lutheran Church, on Monday, October 24, 2022. Memorials may include Trinity Lutheran Church or to a cause of one’s choosing.
