Joyce B. Hinrichs

Joyce B. Hinrichs, age 87, of Hawley, MN, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Hawley Senior Living, Hawley.

Joyce Beverly VanDewerker was born on August 4, 1931 to Warren and Selma (Opperud) VanDewerker in Glenfield, ND. Joyce grew up and attended school in Glenfield, where she was very active with sports and activities, especially basketball. She met the love of her life, Donald Hinrichs, and they were married on December 3, 1949 in Moorhead, MN. Together they made their home in Glenfield and started a family. Joyce enjoyed keeping busy, so she worked a variety of jobs such as school cook, bank teller, and coaching while she was raising her family. She also started her own business where she baked and decorated wedding cakes and did upholstery. Don and Joyce retired in Sibley, ND at Lake Ashtabula.

Joyce had a variety of talents such as quilting by hand, gardening, and upholstery, but her true passion was baking and entertaining. Joyce never let anyone leave empty-handed when they stopped to visit. She prepared delicious baked goods such as pie and cookies for her family, friends, and anyone who visited her.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Terry (Claudia) of Carrington, ND, and Jon (Annette) of Hawley, MN; daughter, Donita (John) Walen of Park Rapids, MN; grandchildren, Michael (Tara) Hinrichs, Jeff (Sara) Hinrichs, Dustin (Amy) Hinrichs, Ryan (Jill) Walen, Krista Walen, Alec (Jackie) Hinrichs, Riley (Henry) Hinrichs, Keifer (Stacie) Hinrichs; 16 great-grandchildren; and brother, Darold VanDewerker.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Donald; three sisters; three brothers; and great-grandson, Cooper Hinrichs.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 10, 2019 at 2:00 P.M., with a visitation one hour before, at Wright Funeral Home, Hawley.
