Karen J. Frey

Karen J. Frey, 81, of Lake Ida, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2021, at home under the care of family and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Karen was born in Worthington, MN, June 12, 1940, to Albert Jr. and Vernis (Johnson) DeJager. She grew up and attended country school in Rushmore, MN, later graduating from high school in Worthington. Karen enjoyed her youth on the family farm, where her love for animals began. Throughout her life she always had a dog and, on the farm, remembered her horse Star. Following high school, Karen continued her education in Mitchell, SD, and received her LPN. She worked as a nurse in Luverne, MN, before moving to Hibbing, MN. Karen earned her RN license and worked in critical care and intensive care until moving to Moorhead in 1987. On September 21, 1991, Karen married Gregory Frey. Together they made their home in Moorhead. She continued working as a nurse and in recent years served as an end of life critical care nurse with Hospice. Karen loved spending time visiting with others. She also enjoyed fishing, sewing, cross stitch, knitting, and spending time at the lake. She was a voracious reader and always inquisitive. She will be remembered for her kind spirit and care she showed others.

Karen is survived by her husband, Gregory; sister, Carol (Johnny) Webb of Moore, OK; stepson, Doug Sather; stepdaughter, Deanne (Terry) Culp of Wichita, KS; five step-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Winston Edson of Cedar Rapids, IA; sisters-in-law, Peggy (Dennis) Reed, Debbie (Jan Gunderson) Vierkant; many nieces and nephews; and their dog, Dutchess.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Vernis; sisters, Muriel (Ed) Tholen, Marceil Edson; nephew, Mark Tholen; and stepsons, Jeff Sather and Lee Sather.

Memorial gathering will be held Sunday, December 19, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Memorial service will be Monday, December 20, at 1:00 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
