Kimberly A. Schreiner

Kimberly Ann Schreiner, 61, of Fargo, ND, passed away in the early morning surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN. Kim was born in Moorhead, MN, on July 9, 1963, to Thomas and Sandra (Askegaard) Schreiner. At an early age, the family moved to Mt. Zion, IL, where she grew up and graduated from high school. Following high school, Kim briefly studied at Richland Community College and worked as a secretary for Judge Paul Francis at the Macon County Attorney’s Office for several years. She also managed a limousine service for a while until moving back to the FM area in 1991. Kim continued her career as a legal assistant at the Clay County Attorney’s Office in Moorhead, MN where she enjoyed her time until her health forced her into retirement in 2014. She was proud of the many Employee of the Month plaques she received there.

Kim received a lung transplant on July 19, 2014 and we’re all eternally grateful for that organ donor.

There is nothing she loved more than her faith, family, friends and the Minnesota Vikings.

Kim rarely missed Sunday Mass and would watch it from home if she couldn't make it in person.

Although she never married or had any children of her own, she was a very special and involved extended family member and friend, especially to her nieces and nephews. Kim was the favorite aunt, the best aunt, and luckily for her siblings and other relatives, always willing to babysit.

She made time for everyone and was always there for the big things, little things and everything in between —from being a confirmation sponsor to spicing up spelling word practice. She loved children and children loved her — mostly for her playful spirit, and a little because she was lax on enforcing rules. This led to the nickname of her house, The Naughty House, where the only rule was to have fun.

After moving back to the FM area she never lost touch with the friends she made in Mt. Zion and was sure to visit at least once a year (alternating Thanksgiving and Christmas time).

Kim was quirky, feisty, personable, occasionally an instigator, yet loyal to a fault. Her personality attracted many friends, both young and old. She looked forward to gathering with friends and family whenever possible and was the glue that brought so many of us together.

She was a lifetime Minnesota Vikings fan (which is a testament to the loyalty she possessed) and enjoyed watching and attending many games, notably with her mom and sister.

Kim liked visiting family and friends on Lake Lida and even rented a cabin there one summer. She was able to travel to several places around the world over her lifetime —Aruba, St. Thomas, Greece, Rome, and Cabo to name a few.

In her later years she enjoyed going to Panama City Beach, Florida with her beloved mother, Sandra, and sister, Shelly, to escape the cold, enjoy sunsets and befriend everyone in the condo association.

The past two years she took on the role of main caretaker for her mother and spent most of her days back in Mt. Zion where she was able to make some new memories with old friends.

When she was home in Fargo, she loved visiting her great-nephew and niece and surprising them with a sweet treat or knickknack.

Kim is survived by her siblings, Darrin (Lori) Schreiner, Shelly Carey, and Dean (Tena) Schreiner; aunts and uncles, Cathy (Dennis) Holmen, Melanie (John) Winberg, Lorita Nelson, and James Schreiner; seven nieces and nephews, Mary (Kyle) Toppen, Chase Carey, Megan (Jake) Blessum, Madison Carey, Nicholas Schreiner, Grant Schreiner, and Kate Schreiner; great-nephew and niece, Oliver and Isla Toppen; cousins, Sarah (Jesse) Ouse, Evan (Julie) Holmen, Archer Winberg, Karson Ouse and several others; honorary niece and nephew, Payton and Jack Packer; and many family members and great friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Sandra Schreiner; aunts and uncles, Richard Schreiner, Victor Schreiner, Donald Schreiner, Jack Schreiner, and Lonnie Gilbertson; and great-nephew, Casper Blessum.

Visitation will be Friday, January 3, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m., in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN.

Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, MN.

In honor of Kim’s love for the Minnesota Vikings, the family kindly requests that attendees wear team colors or apparel to the service & if you ever have a slice of yellow cake with whipped chocolate frosting, think of Kimmy; it was her favorite.

Thank you to all of the Kimmy Keepers, we kept her as long as we could; and a special thank you to the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center ICU doctors, nurses and staff for their care and compassion in her final days.
