Larry Hesteness

May 26, 1953 — July 29, 2020

Larry G. Hesteness, age 67, passed away peacefully in his home in Hawley, MN on July 29, 2020.

Larry was born on May 26, 1953, in Jamestown, ND. He graduated from Hawley High School in 1971 and then attended Detroit Lakes Area Vocational Technical Institution where he studied small engine repair. It was during this time that Larry started working at Hi-10 Sports Center. He later became the successful owner and operator of this business, and truly made it his life’s work.

Larry was an active community member including volunteering for the Hawley Area Fire Department for 40 years. He was an honorary Future Farmers of America chapter degree recipient. Larry served as a church council member at St. Andrews Catholic Church, and he always brought his vibrant personality to his volunteer work at the church’s turkey dinners.

Larry loved racing snowmobiles and was proud to have had four appearances in the Winnipeg-St. Paul International 500 Snowmobile Race. He was an avid race fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR on television and attending sprint car races. Larry spent many hours with his family on Pelican Lake.

Larry most enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Dex, whom he affectionately dubbed “The Little White Tornado.”

Larry is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth J. Hesteness, and his mother, Alice L. Hesteness.

Larry is survived by his wife of 22 years, Susan; brothers, Gary (Pam) Hesteness of Mission, TX and Audubon, MN, and Perry Hesteness of Meridan, ID; children, Andrew Rodke of Rawlins, WY, Craig (Bethany) Hesteness of Fergus Falls, MN, Jill (Jeff DeFries) Hesteness of Pelican Rapids, MN, Katie (David) Gibb of Fargo, ND, and Stephanie (Billy) Jordan of Fargo, ND; nieces, Allyson Hesteness and Ashley Hesteness; and grandchildren, Grace Jordan, Jonah Hesteness, Karl Hesteness, Rolando Garza Jr., Spencer Jordan, and Victoria Garza.

Larry and his family wish to express special thanks to his “A” team at Hawley Sanford, Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and Sanford Hospice.
