Laverne G. Nord

LaVerne Genevieve Yterler Nord died peacefully at home of natural causes on October 31, 2013. She was born May 25, 1920 to Mikkelborg and Ingeborg Bentzen Yterler on their farm near Christine, N.D. She started school in a one-room schoolhouse in rural North Dakota and graduated from Wolverton High School in 1939. She married her high school sweetheart, Willys Nord, on March 1, 1942 in Moorhead, Minnesota and accompanied him cross-country throughout his military flight training. She worked in Moorhead while waiting for Willys to return from service in China-Burma-India during World War II. After the war Willys completed his degree at Concordia College in Moorhead while LaVerne started their family with the birth of LaNae in 1946. They lived in Rugby and Bismarck, North Dakota where Cynthia was born in 1949, and Minneapolis before Willys was called into service for the Korean War. LaVerne was a military wife again, and the family lived in Denver, Colorado where Bradley was born in 1955, Tachikawa, Japan 3 years, Smyrna, Tennessee 10 years and Jessheim, Norway 3 months before they retired to civilian life on a farm outside of Bemidji, Minnesota in 1969. They lived there until Willys’s death in 1988. LaVerne later moved to Moorhead and then to Minnetonka in 2001 to be closer to her daughters in the Twin Cities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Borghild John Mathison 1981, Mildred Joseph Skjonsby 1984, Earl Yterler 1987, and Ragner Mabel Eide Yterler 1999. She is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law – LaNae Crawford and Thomas Doimer of Minnetonka; Cynthia and Steven Ahlgren of St. Paul; son – Bradley Nord of Clermont, Florida; grandchildren – Kristin Crawford Behr; Jon Crawford, Leif Ahlgren, Berit Ahlgren, Anna Liv Ahlgren, Erik Nord, Kyle Nord, and Kia Nord; and great-grandchildren – Brandon Behr, Matthew Behr, Holly Behr, and Adam Behr.

Private interment at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Wolverton, MN in the spring. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Faith Lutheran Cemetery Fund, or the Wounded Warriors Project.
