Lawrence L. Legler

Lawrence L. Legler, 96, died Sunday, July 24, 2016, at Hawley Senior Living in Hawley, MN.

Lawrence was born January 4, 1920, to Ulrich and Maria Braatz Legler at Kurtz Township, Clay County, MN. He grew to manhood on his parent’s farm and, except for serving his country in WWII, he has been a life-long resident of Clay County. Lawrence married Joyce Rootham and they made their home in Moorhead. For more than 20 years, Lawrence was employed by Powers Construction in Fargo, retiring from his position as superintendent in the early 1970’s.

Lawrence was a very active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hawley until the church was closed. He was a very strong family man, and he had very close relationships with all his siblings. Lawrence enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, harmonica and accordion, and he especially loved to sing. The staff and residents of Hawley Senior Living have all been blessed with the gift of his music over the years.

Lawrence is survived by his son, John L. Legler, of Arvada, CO; his daughter-in-law, Shirley Legler, of Hawley, 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers, his wife, Joyce, son, Tom, grandsons, Brian and J.J. and granddaughter, Kelly.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of the Red River Valley and all the staff of Hawley Senior Living for the wonderful, compassionate care they provided to Lawrence over the years. In addition, his daughter-in-law, Shirley, provided constant companionship and loving care to Lawrence that is much appreciated by his family.
