Leatryce Irene Sandman, 83, of Hawley, MN, died August 31, 2022, at Hawley Senior Living.
Leatryce was born February 17, 1939, in Detroit Lakes, MN, to Arthur and Irene (Olund) Troseth. She grew up in rural Ulen, MN graduating from Ulen High School in 1957. She obtained a degree in Library Science from Moorhead State Teacher’s College and worked as a librarian at Hawley High School. After her kids all left home, she worked for several years as the secretary at American Family Insurance in Hawley.
While in high school, Leatryce met the love of her life, Stanley Sandman. Shortly after she graduated college, they married at Atlanta Lutheran Church in Ulen, MN on May 27, 1961. They made their home in Hawley, where they built a new house on Hartford Street. A few years later they moved out to the Sandman family farm in rural Hawley and lived there until 2020 at which time they moved to the Hartford Apartments in Hawley. They moved to Hawley Senior Living earlier this month.
Leatryce and Stanley were blessed with three children, Steven, Mitzi and Paul. Leatryce stayed home to care for them, always coming up with ideas for activities and crafts, while maintaining a welcoming and nurturing home, baking bread and cookies, keeping a large garden, and being a good neighbor to those near and far. She was also very active in their church, Dale Covenant, where her roles included pianist, organist, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study leader, VBS leader, and Conference representative. More recently they became members of Hawley Alliance church where her volunteer work continued as a way to put her strong faith into action. She has also been a long-time member of the Hawley Ladies Study Club and volunteered for years at Steamer Hill in Rollag, MN.
Leatryce is survived by her husband, Stanley Sandman; her children, Steven (Eleanor) Sandman and Mitzi (Paul Blechschmidt); sister, Marlyne Christoffers; grandchildren, Lily Sandman, Marie Sandman Tate, Erica Sandman, Micah Sandman, Zoey Blechschmidt, Piper Blechschmidt, and Graham Blechschmidt, Cerys Deakin and Lara Deakin; and daughter-in-law, Connie Sandman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Paul Sandman.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 6, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home in Hawley, MN. The memorial service will be Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at 2:00 P.M., at Hawley Alliance Church. Burial will be at Dale Covenant Cemetery.
