Leland Frederick Erickson, surrounded by family and loved ones, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND at the age of 84.
Born October 24, 1934 in Grand Forks, ND, the oldest to C.F. (Chris) and M.B. Leona Erickson, he attended schools in Fergus Falls and Morris before returning to Fergus Falls, MN where he graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in 1952. He graduated from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN, class of 1956, notably having participated in the male chorus under the direction of Leland Sateren.
For the next fifteen years, he taught High School mathematics at both Hillcrest Academy and St. Louis Park, MN, notably obtaining 60 post-grad credits (primarily in education, mathematics, and science), and service as MEA President Hennepin Division. It was while teaching in St. Louis Park that he met Marita (Vatthauer) and they married June 14, 1969 at the Lutheran Church of Christ the King in Duluth, MN.
In June of 1974, Leland moved his young family to Lake Park, MN to pursue a new career in farming. Enjoying the management and mechanics, he would continue to be involved in farming for the next forty-plus years.
Preceding him in death were his parents, C.F. and Leona Erickson; two brothers, Leighton and Arland; and sister, Astri. He is survived by his wife, Marita; daughters, Mariya and Evangeline; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Lake Park Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 11:00 A.M.
He considered himself blessed.
