Leo F. Matthys

Leo Frederick Matthys was born on December 8, 1929 in Osgood, ND to Frank and Rose Lisburg Matthys. He grew up on the farm attending rural school. Leo entered the United States Army during the Korean War, and served in the Tank Division in Germany. On April 26, 1954 he married Mildred Jensen in Fargo, ND. Leo worked for Northern Pacific Transport Trucking, Northern Pacific Railroads as a brakeman and most recently, at the NDSU Power Plant in maintenance. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Moorhead VFW. Leo enjoyed fixing and tinkering with small engines, especially his John Deere tractors. He also enjoyed hobby farming throughout his life. He was a resident of Oakport Township for 58 years.He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred, Moorhead, MN; daughters, Lynn Curtis Bitker, Halstad, MN, Joan David Lee, Moorhead, MN and Karen Matthys Keith Jacobson, Hendrum, MN; sons, Donald Matthys, Fargo, ND, Dale Matthys Jean Moe, Moorhead, MN and Keith Matthys, Sioux Falls, SD; brothers, Richard Henny Matthys, Wahpeton, ND, Thomas Matthys, Kansas City, MO and Larry Jane Matthys, Wisconsin; sister, Rosemary Arlan Steffens, Wahpeton, ND; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sigrid Bjorstad, Cando, ND; very special aunt, Barbara Burley, Fargo, ND; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rose Matthys.
