Leo Schmidt

Leo Schmidt, 89, Moorhead, MN passed away on Thursday July 2, 2015 in Golden Living Center, Moorhead, MN.

Leo was born on the family farm in Millerville, MN on August 11, 1925 to Stephan and Mary Jesnowskie Schmidt. He attended country school in Millerville until the 6th grade before going to work on the family farm. Later he moved to the Minneapolis area where he drove a cab for a time before spending many years as a truck driver. He married Lois Thorstad in 1953. Later they moved to Moorhead, MN and Leo went to work for Paul Horn Farms before taking a job as a forklift operator with Fargo Foundry, now Mid-America Steel, where he worked until his retirement.

During his working years he spent nearly every weekend at Little Toad Lake campground near Frazee, MN where he camped and helped maintain the grounds. When he retired he’d spend his entire summers at the campground. He very much enjoyed visiting with fellow campers and residents.

He is survived by his son, Steve Schmidt, Moorhead, MN; step-son Terry Kari Erickson, Moorhead, MN; sisters, Patricia Del Dobler, Fargo, ND, Aemilia Duanne Ellertson, Oakdale, MN; granddaughter, Nicole Mord, Fargo, ND, and two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Colton Mord.

He was preceded in death by his second wife Margaret Ohnstad Schmidt, parents, and three sisters, Gurtrude, Cordelia, and Cecelia.

Visitation: Wednesday, July 8, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Wednesday, July 8, at 11:00 a.m., in Wright Funeral Home.

Interment: Mount Olive Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes, MN.
