Leona P. Anderson

Leona P. Anderson, age 90, of Hawley, MN, died Wednesday, August 25, 2010, in Sanford Health, Fargo, North Dakota.Leona was born December 18, 1919, near Hawley, Minnesota to Arthur and Kate Plummer Lewis. She grew up and attended school in Hawley, graduating from Hawley High School in 1938. Leona attended Moorhead State College, graduating in 1942. Following her graduation from college she taught in Wheaton, Minnesota for two years. Leona married Arnold Anderson on June 26, 1944, in Hawley, Minnesota. They resided in Hawley their entire life. Arnold died June 11, 2001. Leona worked for the City of Hawley for three years and was a bookkeeper for Thysell's Hardware Store for three years. She then taught science and girls Physical Education at Hawley High School for twenty-one years, retiring from teaching in 1976. In 1980, she began working part time at the Hawley Herald Office where she was still employed. Leona was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Quilters, Women's Study Club, United Methodist Women and the Hawley United Methodist Church. In 1977, she received the "Today's Women Award" from the Hawley Women of Today and also that year the "Hawley Booster Club Award."God bless the memory of Leona, she will be missed dearly by all those who knew her.She is survived by sisters, Luella Kenneth Jensen of Breckenridge, MN, Susan Sorenson of Woodbury, MN and Marilyn Krogh of Fort Collins, CO; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews and sisters-in-law, Florence Anderson of Moorhead, MN and Ida Lewis-Busby of Hitterdal, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Verne and Charles Lewis; sisters, Beatrice Lewis, Elda Gill and Evelyn Lewis; infant brother, Milford, brothers-in-law, Allan, Norris, Clifford and Clayton Anderson and sister-in-law, Ruth Hanson.In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hawley United Methodist Church, Hawley Public Library or Hawley American Legion Auxiliary.
