Leonard J. Tangen

Leonard J. Tangen, 95, of Hawley, MN, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018 at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Leonard John Tangen was born in rural Hawley, MN, on June 7, 1923, to Elling and Caroline (Olson) Tangen.  Leonard was baptized on November 2, 1923, and confirmed on September 27, 1936, by Rev. S. G. Hauge. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in the Hawley area.

On June 27, 1943, Leonard married Jewell Jegtvig in Moorhead, MN.  A skilled truck driver, Leonard drove for Daggett Truck Line Inc. of Frazee, MN and later purchased his own truck to haul cattle for area farmers.  Working as a team Leonard and Jewell were a formidable twosome raising corn, wheat, and soybeans and feeding cattle on their farm adjacent to Hawley.

Over the years, Leonard served in leadership roles in the Hawley community including the State Bank of Hawley (now Valley Premier), Hawley Cooperative Elevator, Hawley Township Board, Hawley Lutheran Church, and was a charter member of Living Grace Lutheran Church.

Leonard so enjoyed farming and feeding cattle, fishing, football games, and trips with Jewell.  Leonard’s warm smile, hearty laugh, listening ear, quick wit, kindness, and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him.

Leonard is survived by his sister, Clarice Amundson, Moorhead, MN, and many nieces and nephews.  Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell; infant sons, Elling and Keith; parents, Elling and Caroline; brothers Selmer, Elmer, Melgard, Elling Jr., and Carl; and sisters, Agnes Halvorson and Mildred.

Visitation: Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 at Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.

Funeral: Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Hawley United Methodist Church, Hawley, MN.

Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery.
