Lillie L. Johnson, 101, of Hawley, MN, died Monday, November 13, 2017, at Hawley Senior Living, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Lillie was born March 4, 1916, on the family farm in Keene Township, Minnesota, to Ole A. and Caroline (Jensen) Christensen. She grew up and attended District #44 country school, north of Hawley, MN. During World War II she helped her oldest brother with the farm work while her younger brothers were in the Army. Lillie was married to Arthur M. Johnson on September 30, 1950 in Lysne Lutheran Church, rural Hawley, MN. Following their marriage, they farmed near Hawley for ten years and then moved to Hawley where Lillie worked for Peterson Brothers and Johnson stores for many years. She also worked at the Riverside Inn for Ernest and Edna Swenson. After her husband’s death she moved to the Northside Terrace Apartments in Hawley. She delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program and was a driver for many people that needed a ride to appointments.
Lillie liked to sew, embroider, crochet, and her favorite pastime was making quilts. She was an active member of the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge, Senior Citizen’s Center, Homemaker’s Club and the Cromwell Hobby Club. She was a member of Hawley Lutheran Church, where she made many baptism towels and quilts for mission work.
Lillie is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Albert, Albin, Henry, Rainhart and Alfred; and one sister, Nina Hajek.
Funeral service: Monday, November 20, 2017, at 1:00 P.M., with visitation from noon to 1:00, at Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN. Interment: Hawley Cemetery.
