Lloyd L. Burnside, 87, of Hawley, MN, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2017 in the presence of his loving family in Essentia Health, Fargo, ND.
Born on his family’s farm, north of Hawley, MN, on February 11, 1930, Lloyd was the son of John J. Burnside and Sena Dwyer Burnside. He attended District 104 Country School and graduated from Hawley High School in 1948. He spent his early years farming with his father until entering the U.S. Army in 1951, proudly serving during the Korean War. Upon his discharge in 1953, he returned to Hawley and in 1957 purchased the family farm. Shortly thereafter, on June 28, 1957, he married Virginia Berend in Frazee, MN. Together they had three children, Vicki, Tom and Jean. They were the pride and joy of his life.
Lloyd was employed by the Hawley Post Office as a rural mail carrier for 20 years and served as a member of the Rural Mail Carriers’ Association. For many years he was a devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and then Hawley Lutheran Church. He also served three years on the Hawley School Board.
Lloyd was a kind and vibrant man who loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed life, the outdoors, deer hunting with the members of Camp “8” and taking drives around the countryside. He was also a member of the Rod & Gun Club. Lloyd’s passion for “gardening” led to many friends made through truck farming in the West Fargo area. It was often said there wasn’t a stranger that Lloyd didn’t know – or a smile kept to oneself. There was nothing he liked better than an interesting conversation or meeting up with his buddies for a card game — a top priority, never to be missed.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Virginia Burnside, Hawley, MN; his daughter Vicki Burnside , Hawley, MN; son Tom with Julie Burnside, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Jean with Tim Schwartz of Buford, GA; and four grandchildren, Nicholas Burnside, Doyle with Abby Burnside, Kayla with Chris Dorhout and Ashley Schwartz. He is also survived by his brother, Orvin with Clarice Burnside of Oak Park Heights, MN and his sister, Marjorie Olson of Washington State.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents John and Sena Burnside; brothers Frank, Russell Sr, Clarence and Francis Burnside; and sisters Doris Henrickson, Alice Hoaglin and Mabel Cozine.
Lloyd will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.
