Lloyd Howard Schulz, Moorhead (formerly Casselton), passed away on July 9, 2021 at the age of 79. He was born July 29, 1941 to Lloyd Ferdinand and Elsie Louise (Zitzow) Schulz at the Perham Hospital. The first years of his life were spent living in the house on the hill above the family brick foundry in Vergas. In his early years, his folks moved with him and his sister Patricia to Moorhead. At 12 years of age, Lloydie started spending summers at the farm of his Uncle Loren and Aunt Loretta on the homesteaded land in Edgeley, ND. In later years, he scheduled vacation so that he could be a part of the harvesting activities.
Lloyd graduated from Moorhead High School in 1959 and then attended NDSU briefly studying Mechanical Engineering. He served our country in the Air Force spending his four (4) years in San Antonio, Biloxi, Minot and Labrador where he was an armed forces radio show DJ. He returned to Moorhead and began a 35-year career with AT&T.
Lloyd married Judy Anderson in 1965 and they moved to Casselton where they raised their two sons in a house that he built one summer with his father. Lloyd coached pee wee baseball for four years coordinating practices and driving the bus to away games. He participated decades in the evening softball league as an outfielder for Bobby’s Bar and R.D. Offutt. Indeed, he was still poking hits when his two sons were old enough to participate as players. Lloyd served as a Casselton City Alderman for eight years and later on the city Variance Board. He was recognized by the city for his contributions to the council and youth sports.
Lloyd and Judy spent many years at the family property on Long Lake by Vergas. Most early mornings and evenings Lloyd could be found on the water in pursuit of walleye and crappie but often landed bass. He loved fishing with a personal best 31” walleye hanging on the trophy wall at Lloyd’s Lodge. Outdoor pursuits in earlier years included many trips hunting ND pheasant and whitetail with recent outings for turkey in MN. He was a member of the Cass County Wildlife Club.
Lloyd most enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up teaching them the finer points of playing pinocle, cooking vegetable soup and dry wit.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy; son Doug (Vergas, MN); grandchildren Maxx (Minneapolis, MN) and Chaz (Minneapolis, MN); sister Patricia Lindquist (Glencoe, OK); uncles Loren (Loretta) Schulz (Edgeley, ND), Willmar (Marie) Zitzow (Fargo, ND), Elmer (Pat) Zitzow (Dent, MN); aunts Bernette Sandau (Edgeley, MN), Marlene (Ray) Carow (Alexandria, MN), Dorine Schamens (St. George, UT) and Elvie Zitzow (Detroit Lakes, MN); and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son David.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at 2:00 P.M., with a visitation starting one hour before, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead. A livestream of the service will be available here on Lloyd’s obituary page starting at 2:00 P.M.
