Loren A. Helmeke

Loren A. Helmeke, 96, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2016.

Loren Albert Helmeke was born May 4, 1920 in Georgetown Township to Fred and Lavina Helmeke. He was raised on the farm in Viding Township, went to rural school and then graduated from Moorhead High School in 1937.

Loren was inducted into the U.S. Army in July, 1942. He was discharged in February 1946 with several medals, including the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He married Florence Bennefeld in 1942 and was divorced in 1946. He spent two years working as a logger in northern California. He returned to the Georgetown, MN, area in 1948 and worked one year as a Standard Oil agent, before he started farming. In 1953 he was appointed as Rural Mail Carrier at Georgetown, MN, and served until his retirement in 1980.

Loren married Agatha “Aggie” Pederson in 1952. They enjoyed nearly 56 years of marriage. They did a lot of traveling and attended many Rural Letter Carriers Conventions as Loren was Minnesota State Rural Letter Carrier Treasurer and then State Secretary. He was named State Carrier of the Year in 1976.

Aggie passed away April 20, 2008.

Loren was an avid book reader, enjoyed fishing and loved spending time playing cards with his family.

Loren is survived by one sister, Isabelle, Seattle, WA; two brothers, Waldo, Le Sueur, MN, Kerry Kay, Chapin, SC; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and four brothers, Harold, Maynard, Lloyd and Lester.

Visitation: Friday, November 4, 2016 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM
with a prayer services beginning at 6:30 in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN.

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
