Lorraine G. Mickelson

April 18, 1927 — April 9, 2017

Lorraine Mickelson
Lorraine G. Mickelson, 89 of Moorhead, formerly of Hawley, passed away April 9, 2017 at Eventide Senior Living surrounded by her family.
Lorraine was born on April 18, 1927 on the family farm north of Hawley, MN to Edward and Johanna Nelson Aune. She was the middle child of five girls. As a young girl, she loved helping her family on the farm, playing in the garden and bringing lunches to her father in the field. Lorraine and her best friend and cousin, Jean, spent many hours playing, singing and growing up together. As a young woman, she moved to Fargo to live with her sisters and friends, working early mornings at Kresge’s and Federal Bakery. She met Morris Mickelson shortly after WWII and they were married at Lysne Lutheran Church in Rural Hawley in 1950.
They started a family and built a home together in Hawley, becoming active members of their church, working tirelessly at the family business, and joining community groups. Lorraine supported her husband and children, keeping a lovely home and garden, developing their faith and nurturing their creative interests. Kindness and hospitality were baked into her wonderful cakes, buns and cookies. She loved her church and was active in circle, choir and altar guild, where she carefully attended to making the church beautiful.
In her later years she cherished music, nature, taking rides in the country, and hearing about her grandchildren’s latest accomplishments. Her deep wisdom grew out of her love for God and family. She recently said, “When my family is together, I can feel Thanksgiving in my bones.”
Lorraine is survived by her daughter Kari Ron Miles, Denver, son Dwight, Moorhead, daughter-in-law Karla Mickelson, Hawley; grandchildren Justice and Honor Miles; sisters Joanne Robert Anderson, Richfield, and Donna Wallace, Chaska.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Morris, son Duane, and sisters Eileen Ken Handegaard and Jewel Lowell Johnson.
Visitation will be at 1pm, with the funeral at 2pm at Hawley Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 18, her 90th birthday.
Interment will be at Hawley Cemetery.
