Lucille (Bernice) Schuman, 97, West Fargo, ND, formerly Gilbertsville, KY died peacefully on 12/19/2020. She was born 4/23/1923 at Comstock, MN, to E.A and Florence (Thompson) Bernhardson. The third of eight children, she graduated from Comstock High School and MSTC now MSUM, Moorhead, MN. She taught in Rustad, MN, prior to her marriage to Glenn Schuman of Minnewaukan, ND, on June 11, 1944. After a few years at Minnewaukan, they lived on farms at Warren, Shelly, and Hendrum, MN, before moving to Amenia, ND, where she returned to teaching. After moving to Moorhead, Lucille continued teaching at Gardner, ND, until a job transfer for Glenn took them to Farmington, MN. Another transfer took them to KY in 1978 and they enjoyed many years together there in retirement. Wherever they lived they were active in their church and were charter members of St Matthews of the Lake, rural Benton, KY.
Lucille survived two strokes and intensive rehab before moving to North Dakota in April 2018 to be closer to family. She was a resident of Kinder Care, whose loving staff became her family during the isolation of COVID, with the additional support of Hospice of the Red River Valley. In the words of a younger friend, “She was my inspiration to age gracefully, keep an open mind, and accept change even in the most trying of times.”
Preceded by Glenn (2002), her husband of 57 years, her parents E.A. and Florence Bernhardson, and her siblings, Drell and wife, Adeline, Lois and Wally Bernhardson, and brothers-in-law, Marvin Leiseth and Allan Kassenborg.
