Lyle D. Sustad

Lyle D. Sustad, 68, of Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, in the Fargo VA Community Living Center.
Lyle Dean Sustad was born on August 23, 1947, in Thief River Falls, MN, to Glen and Ella Skretvedt Sustad. He grew up in Stephen, MN, and graduated from Stephen High School in 1965. After graduation, Lyle attended Thief River Falls Junior College for one year before he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. Lyle spent a year in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in December of 1969. On April 3, 1971, he married Karen Meek in Stephen, MN. They made their home in Moorhead, MN, and had three children. In 1976 Lyle earned a bachelor degree in accounting from Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
Over the years Lyle built an accounting career in the Fargo-Moorhead area, applying his skills across a variety of industries, including management, banking and landscaping. He owned and operated Shop’n Run convenience store in Moorhead before becoming a self-employed accountant. Lyle also worked at Piper Tax in Casselton, ND, during the tax season. He was very active in his church. He held positions of both president and treasurer on the church council before working part time as the church treasurer and bookkeeper. He loved his work and continued until ALS made it impossible to continue.
Lyle started each morning with a cup of coffee, the daily crossword puzzle and Bible devotions. He also enjoyed playing golf, reading books about history and religion, working in the yard and most recently watching Westerns on TV while at the VA. Lyle loved to eat and enjoyed cooking. He enjoyed dining out with friends and trying new restaurants. Karen and Lyle enjoyed going on road trips over the years. In 2015, they traveled to Washington D.C. over Memorial Day weekend, checking it off Lyle’s bucket list. Most of all Lyle loved being with his family. He was a devoted Papa who always attended his grandchildren’s sports events and activities. He could often be found playing Legos and puzzles with them or kicking a soccer ball. It was important to him to always make sure his family was happy, which gave him the most joy.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Karen, Moorhead; two daughters, Marnie Brock Swanson, Sartell, MN, and Amber Scott Arnseth, Golden Valley, MN; son, Aaron Kate Sustad, Ft. Myers, FL; mother, Ella Sustad, Ada, MN; siblings, Keith Jeanne Sustad, Stephen, MN, Dean Gale Sustad, Littleton, CO, Merilee Mark Potucek, Ada, MN, and Arden Carrie Sustad, Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Barb Sustad, Eden Prairie, MN; six grandchildren, Sydney and Chloe Swanson, Jude and Jasper Arnseth, and Rohan and Mackenzie Sustad; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen; brother, Gary; niece, Katie Sustad; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Doris Meek; and brother-in-law, Robert Meek.
