Lyn D. Birkeland

Lyn D. Birkeland, 72, of Dilworth, MN, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020, at the VA Medical Center, Fargo, ND. Lyn was born April 1, 1948, to Merlyn Ecklund and Audrey (Birkeland) Heiraas in Mahnomen, MN. He grew up and attended school in Ada, MN, graduating in 1966. Shortly after high school, Lyn enlisted in the U.S. Army. After serving 1968 – 1969 in Vietnam, he returned to the area and began his career at American Crystal Sugar in Hillsboro, ND, where he spent the next 35 years. After retiring, he lived in Moorhead for a year before settling in Dilworth in 2003. Lyn enjoyed taking care of his lawn and his gardens. He enjoyed being outside and his daily walks, his time on his motorcycle, and took pride in his involvement with the FM Crusaders. Lyn was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Lyn is survived by his daughter, Courtney Greenwaldt of Dilworth, MN; son, Brandon (Elizabeth) Birkeland of Portland, ND; grandchildren, Isaac Ahlin, Dylan Hintzen, Audrie and Aspen Greenwaldt, Alexandra and Brookelyn Birkeland, and Ava Lee; brother, Randy (Cathy) Heiraas; sister, Wendy (Mark) Grotte; and nieces and nephews, Shawn, Ryan, Andrea, Jeff and Bryana.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amber Lee, and his parents.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 19, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., followed by the memorial service at 1:00 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead.

Interment will be at Fargo National Cemetery on Friday, September 25, 2020, at 2:00 P.M.
