Lynne Ann Kovash

Lynne Ann (Doxey) Kovash of Moorhead died February 14, 2019, from cancer at the age of 66.

A service celebrating her life will be at 11 am , February 23, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN, with Rev. Simon Fensom officiating. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm, February 22 at Trinity in the Christian Life Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be directed in Lynne’s name toMoorhead Area Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1006, Moorhead, MN 56561-1006 for scholarships to graduates of Moorhead High School OR to the Moorhead Schools Legacy Foundation, P.O. Box 508, Moorhead, MN 56561-0508 for educational enhancements.

Born September 12, 1952, in West Point, New York, she lived in Germany, Panama, Chicago, Denver, Boston, and New York with her parents and siblings before they moved to Moorhead; she graduated from Moorhead High School in 1970. In 1973, she married Dennis Kovash, and they lived in St. Paul, Eau Claire, and Hibbing before returning to Moorhead.

Lynne received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Minnesota State University – Moorhead, and her Doctorate of Education from University of North Dakota. She was also a proud supporter of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Kovash spent her entire career in education with Moorhead Area Public Schools. Beginning as a special education teacher, she served as an assistant principal, the supervisor of planning and assessment, and assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. She served as the district’s superintendent from 2008 until her retirement following her cancer diagnosis in 2017. Passionate about learning and teaching, she was always mindful of the impact decisions would have on children and families.

In the community and beyond, she was involved as a leader. Kovash served as the President for the Moorhead Rotary and was a member of the Minnesota Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Greater Fargo-Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, United Way of Cass-Clay in Fargo, Minnesota State University-Moorhead (MSUM) Foundation Board, and the Fargo-Moorhead Chamber of Commerce. She was inducted into the Moorhead High School Hall of Honor in 2018.  Lynne was elected President of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators in 2014 and won the prestigious Polaris Leadership Award in 2018 for a lifetime of achievement in education.  She also served on many local, state, and national educational advisory committees.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Loretta (Kaste) and Frederick Doxey.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis; children Jeremy (Deanna) Kovash; Seth (Jennifer) Moland-Kovash; Jennifer (Jason) Spitzner; grandchildren Jace, Maddux, Sydnie, Evan, Carl, Rylie; brothers Dave (Julie) Doxey and Mike; sister Marilyn (Richard) Roehl; and many other beloved family members.

Final resting place will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead, MN, on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at 7:00 P.M.
