Mabel “May” E. Olsgaard

Mabel May Elizabeth Olsgaard, 88, was born on May 12, 1928 in Van Hook, N.D. to Borger and Olga Hveem Varloe, where they farmed. She died Saturday, May 28, at Eventide Nursing Home. She graduated from Van Hook High School, Minot State Teachers College and the Lutheran Bible Institute in Seattle. She taught elementary school in North Dakota at Lakota, New Salem and Horace Mann in Fargo.

May married Maurice Olsgaard July 30, 1972 at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. They lived in Moorhead and farmed with his brothers Harold and Ted near Rustad. May was a member of Hoff Lutheran Church. She belonged to the Sons of Norway where they participated in Kringen Kor and dancing, Gideons International, Homemakers Club, Gardening Club, and Fargo Retired Teachers Association. She did volunteer work with several organizations. Over the years May was involved with genealogy research and helped produce a family history and arrange family reunions. May and Maurice enjoyed travels to Norway, Israel and trips across the country.

The family is grateful for the special care she received from Eventide Nursing Home and Hospice.

May is survived by her brother Arthur Valroe, Surrey, N.D.; nieces Carol Robert Awe, Bonita John Kallestad, Beatrice Larry Odde, Dorinda Paetz, and Brenda Wilton McCoy; nephews Richard Wurtz, Don Lauri Schuneman, Jerry Rachael Wurtz, Roland Wurtz, John Rachelle Wurtz, David Shantel Wurtz and Brian Varloe; sisters-in-law Ida Flaaten, Hazel Jerry Iwen, Anne Olsgaard, Norma Olsgaard; brothers-in-law Otto Olsgaard, Richard Rose Olsgaard, Charles Mary Olsgaard, and Harry Kakutani; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice Olsgaard on June 29, 2013 after 40 years of marriage; her parents; sisters Bertha Varloe, Helen Schuneman, Anna Varloe, and Dorothy Wurtz; and brother John Varloe.

Visitation: Wednesday, June 1, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Thursday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m., in Hoff Lutheran Church, Rustad, MN.

Interment: Hoff Cemetery, Rustad, MN.
