Margery A. Possehl, 84, Moorhead, MN, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, April 16, 2015, in The Evergreens of Moorhead under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Margery Ann Johnson was born on September 29, 1930, in Fergus Falls, MN, to Warren and Anna Holt Johnson. She grew up and attended school there, graduating from Fergus Falls High School in 1948. While still in high school Margery served as the organist at the First Congregational Church in Fergus Falls. She graduated from Moorhead State University in 1952, where she played organ for chapel services as a student.
Margery married Dewey Possehl on June 8, 1952, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, MN. They lived in Moorhead, MN and she taught in Glyndon, MN before moving to Mahnomen, MN where they lived from 1953 until 1957. In 1957, Margery taught music part-time in Iowa while Dewey was attending graduate school there. They moved to Moorhead in 1959. She had been a church musician at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead for 34 years, playing the organ and also directing choirs. She also served at First Presbyterian and the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead.
Margery was fortunate to have been able to do some traveling with Dewey in an RV all over the United States.
Margery belonged to the American Guild of Organists and served as Dean for the Red River Valley Chapter for two years. She had chaired the Bethesda Women’s Organization and the Worship and Music Committee and also played in the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.
And she made great pie.
Margery is survived by her husband, Dewey, Moorhead, MN; four daughters, Jan Jeff Scholl, White Bear Lake, MN, Christie Possehl, Monument, CO, Polly John Preston, Hermosa, SD, Sara Bradley Forness, West Fargo, ND; two sisters Louise Braaten, Florida, and Norma Danielson, Richfield, MN; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
