Marlene Verdell Berg

Marlene Verdell (Haslerud) Berg, 83, of Hawley, MN, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2020, in Hawley Senior Living, Hawley, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Marlene was born on March 25, 1936, in Hawley, MN, to Theodore and Alma (Larson) Haslerud. She grew up on the family farm in Hawley and attended Hawley High School. After high school, she worked at restaurants in the Hawley area for many years. She married Orland Thompson on November 9, 1957. Orland passed away on January 14, 1973. Marlene began working for American Linen where she worked for 30 years ultimately as a Supervisor. She was united in marriage to Leighton “Al” Berg on December 10, 1977 and he passed away on September 6, 1994. Marlene retired from American Linen and began working at the Wahl Drug Café in Hawley for a number of years. After her retirement, she resided in Hawley until her passing.

Marlene was a circle member at Hegland Lutheran Church and enjoyed playing bingo. She loved dogs, taking photos, and cooking for her family. She especially enjoyed her social time whether it be visiting with her friends for coffee or spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Marlene is survived by her brothers, Theodore (Elaine) Haslerud and Wayne (Tania) Haslerud; nieces and nephews, Jason (Anne) Haslerud, Kendra (Clyde) Dicks, Jessica (Dusty) Green, and Scott (Kristy) Haslerud, Deb Tweten, and Rick Olson; many great-nieces and nephews; and many other loving relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Alma; first husband, Orland; and second husband, Al.

Visitation will be from noon to 1:00 P.M., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 P.M., on Friday, February 7, 2020, at Hegland Lutheran Church, Rural Hawley, MN. Burial will be at Hegland Lutheran Church Cemetery.
