Mary E. Wawers, 67, Battle Lake, MN, died Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo.
Mary Elaine Nelson was born March 7, 1949, in Fargo, ND, to Howard and Dorothy Isaacson Nelson. She graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1967 and attended nursing school at St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Fargo, graduating in 1969. Her first nursing job was in Duluth, MN and she later worked in critical care and cardiac care nursing in Hawley, Fargo, and Ada. In July of 1971 she married William McCullough. She was married to Terry Wawers in March 1991 and they made their home in Hawley and Battle Lake. Mary retired from nursing in 2003. In 2004 she became a kidney recipient and she was able to live another 12 years due to the generosity of her organ donor. Mary enjoyed spending time knitting, reading, bird-watching and caring for animals, and she especially loved politics.
She is survived by her daughter, Kristen Kaszynski, Elmwood, WI; her step-son, Darin Stephanie Wawers, Detroit Lakes, and her grandchildren, Skye O’Brien, Brett Wawers, and McKenna Kaszynski. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Terry, and her son-in-law, Kyle Kaszynski.
Mary’s family believes that the greatest tribute people could give to Mary would be to consider becoming an organ donor.
