Mayme Pauline Pluhar was born on February 8, 1923 at the Pluhar homestead near Cohagen, Montana. She is the fifth child of William and Mary Pluhar. She graduated from Cohagen High School in 1940. She attended Miles City Secretarial College and worked at an insurance company and later at Yellowstone Lumber Company in Miles City, MT.
In May of 1943 she joined the Navy during World War II. She was classified as a storekeeper and spent the next three years working in the Finance Office of the 12th Naval District in San Francisco. After the war, she flew as a stewardess with the Naval Air Transport Service. She reported to the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Maryland, and became a Flight Orderly 1st Class. She spent five years of her career in the Navy Waves and worked on the NATS Shuttle flights to the USA, Bermuda, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad.
In 1948, she returned to Montana State College and majored in Home Economics. In her sophomore year, she married John Barton in Miles City, MT and later moved to Saco, Montana where her first son Cody Kyrobie was born. She later divorced John and moved to Harlowton, Montana. She taught Home Economics, General Science, and Physical Education to high school children at Harlowtown High School.
In 1956 she travelled to the Trier Air Base in West Germany with John O. Bye. They were married on August 28th, 1956. There, she gave birth to her daughter, Carolyn. They later transferred to Warner Robins, Georgia in 1959 where her son William John was born. They moved to Alconbury Air Base in England for 3 years and then returned back to Cheyenne Wyoming where her last son, Kenneth Arndt was born.
In 1964 her family returned to Moorhead, MN to farm with John’s father. She was a very active farmer and gardener for 35 years with her family by her side. She helped with 4H, Hoff Lutheran Ladies Aid, and was an active Sons of Norway member. She and her husband John loved to polka dance and never missed an opportunity to compete with their dancing skills. She loved every opportunity to be with her grandchildren and helped raise them.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary; siblings, Edward Pluhar, Elsie Pluhar-Herndon, Sylvia Pluhar-Lilienthal, William Pluhar, and Leonard Pluhar; and son, Cody Kyrobie. She leaves behind her loving husband, John O. Bye; brother, Arthur Pluhar; children, Carolyn Bye (Handlos), William (Bill) Bye, and Kenneth Bye; grandchildren, Channa Erickson, Kristen Erickson, Kenneth Bye Jr., Alaina Bye, Vanessa Kyrobie, and Angela Kyrobie; two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Kora Kyrobie-Hadley.
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 6:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Final resting place will be at Moorhead Memorial Gardens at a later date in the spring.
