Maynard Charles Frisk, 90, of Hawley, MN, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, surrounded by family members and friends who love him.
Maynard was born on the family farm east of Hawley, MN, on June 18, 1924, the son of Albert and Minnie Westberg Frisk. He graduated from school in Hawley and went on to join the United States Army. He was a radio operator in the Asian Pacific Theater during World War II and was with the First Cavalry Division when they occupied Japan as the war was drawing to a close.
After fulfilling his military duties, he returned to Hawley to marry Leona Anderson: a union that lasted 57 years and brought him great joy. He joined his uncle, Melvin Ulven, in a local sand and gravel business and later, became sole proprietor of Ulven Gravel Company until his retirement in 1990. In his business dealings and in his personal life, he was a man of great integrity.
In the years since his retirement, Maynard continued to serve his community through his compassion and desire to help others, taking them to their medical appointments in Fargo and visiting retirement and nursing homes regularly.
He was a kind man who always placed people on a higher level than things, power or position. He knew a man’s strength was demonstrated by how much he loved others and how well he put their needs before his own. As a father and grandfather, he loved unconditionally and was always gentle and kind. His family members and friends will miss him sorely, knowing a man of his caliber cannot be replaced. As though all those character traits were not enough, he was very funny and loved ice cream. He was often heard to say, “I need ice cream. I think I’m a quart low.”
Maynard is survived by his son, Mark Brenda Frisk; three grandchildren, Mari Frisk, Sarah Jeff Moss, and Paul Frisk; one great-grandson, John Maynard Moss; and one brother August Thelma Frisk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Minnie Frisk, by his dear wife, Leona; and by two brothers: Marvin Frisk and Malcolm Frisk.
The family wishes to thank Sanford Hospital and particularly, Dr. Hasrat Khan and nurse Ellen Potts, who lovingly ministered to all of Maynard’s loved ones, while still caring for all of his needs.
