Maynard Lyle was born on October 10, 1925, in Underwood, ND to Milton Johannes and Mary Snyder Johannes Cleveland. He grew up and graduated high school in Underwood, ND. Upon graduation, he farmed with his father. On September 15, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Leidholm, at Birka Lutheran Church, Washburn, ND. They lived in the Underwood area for 15 years where Maynard farmed and did carpentry work. They lived in Bismarck, ND and Jamestown, ND for a short while before moving to Kulm, ND, where all their children graduated from high school. Maynard managed Farmer's Co-op Lumber in Kulm. In 1976 Maynard and Joyce moved to Hawley, MN, where Maynard managed Ireland's Lumber and worked at Cenex. Most recently he worked for the City of Hawley where he mowed and started the recycling program. In 2009 they moved to Park Gardens Assisted Living, Fergus Falls, MN; where Maynard enjoyed many activities including Bingo. Maynard was a very active member in his church community. He held many leadership positions at Hawley Lutheran Church, including treasurer for 18 years. He was a member of the Kulm Lion's Club, and active with the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag, MN and the Hawley Rodeo. Maynard was instrumental in the development of the emergency response teams in both Kulm and Hawley. He enjoyed gardening, knitting Afghans, and lending a helping hand with his carpentry skills. Most of all, Maynard loved being a grandpa to his grandchildren and all of the church and neighborhood kids.Maynard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce; son, Michael Karen Johannes, Prior Lake, MN; two daughters, JoAnn Bowman, Fergus Falls, MN and Sally Brandenburger, Fergus Falls, MN; grandchildren; Marcus Aanna Johannes, Shakopee, MN, Christina Johannes, Prior Lake, MN, Joshua Bowman, Minneapolis, MN, David Trisha Debilzen Bowman, Fergus Falls, MN, Trapper Andrea Brandenburger, Everett, WA and Cole Brandenburger, Bothell, WA; three great-grandchildren, Seth Berry, Everett, WA, Oliver and Stone Brandenburger, Everett, WA; four brothers, Iver Johannes, Merl Zona Johannes, Terry Laurie Johannes and Lane Mary Johannes; four sisters, Eileen Dell, Doris Leidholm, Lola Garnett Andrews and Claudia Chuck Gullicks; sister-in-law, Margurite Freeman.He is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Clifford Cleveland, son, Lyle, and grandson, David. Memorials are preferred to Hawley Lutheran Church Youth Ministry, Box 580, Hawley, MN and HERT, Box 928, Hawley, MN.Maynard's family invites everyone to join them in wearing suspenders at the funeral in honor of Maynard.
