Melgard B. Tangen

June 16, 1912 — April 5, 2010

Melgard was born on June 16, 1912, in Carpenter, Iowa, to Elling and Caroline Tangen. He farmed west of Hawley on the same land his father farmed. On September 8, 1940, he married Annie Ford and they had 5 children.Over the years Melgard raised small grains and had feeder cattle and hogs. The family was active in the Silver Lake 4-H Club for many years. In 1976 Melgard and Annie retired and moved into the town of Hawley. Melgard worked part-time as a groundskeeper at the Hawley Golf Course until the age of 89. He enjoyed the work as well as the people that worked with him. He also enjoyed listening to music and played the harmonica.Melgard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Annie; a son, Melvin Lourdes Tangen of Breckenridge, MN; his daughters, Beverley Tang, Bismarck, ND; Karen Marv Lofgren, Sterling, IL, and Elaine Jake Jacobson, Mandan, ND, and a daughter-in-law, Ginger Johnson Tangen, of West Fargo; a brother, Leonard, and a sister, Clarice Alfred Amundson, all of Moorhead, MN. Also surviving are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elling and Caroline Tangen; a son, Richard Tangen; and brothers, Elmer, Selmer, Elling Jr.; and a sister, Agnes Halvorson.
