Melvin Krein, 79, of Moorhead, died June 15th at home under the care of Hospice. Born July 21, 1939 in Arena, ND to Arthur and Marie Krein. Mel attended a farm school in Tuttle before the family moved to Denhoff, ND. After moving to West Fargo in 1958, Mel enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Texas and Germany.
In 1961, while employed at the Union Stockyards, he married the love of his life, Beverly Leroy of Fargo. They made their home in West Fargo and started their family.
Although Mel earned an Associate’s Degree from Devry Institute of Technology, he chose to drive semi-trucks for a living. He retired from Consolidated Freightways in 1999.
He was an avid card player and a jack of all trades. He could tackle and solve any problem, was always quick to lend a helping hand, and had a very busy garage. He was a self-taught mechanic and a talented autobody man. He rebuilt cars as a hobby, which provided for his love of travel, and helped many friends and neighbors with their cars.
A worldly and experienced traveler, he and Bev enjoyed the various cultures and experiences from all the continents except Antarctica. Australia remained his favorite place of travel.
Mel is survived by his wife Beverly; daughters, Brenda Quick, HI, Bobbette (Kevin) Bengs, AZ; grandchildren, Blake Krein, Kate, Ben, Thomas, and Sarah Quick, Matthew Strang, Marcus and Brandon Bengs; great granddaughter, Jaidyn Krein; and his sister, Alvina (Wayne) Schafer.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Elizabeth Ogden, granddaughter Ashley Anderson, son-in-law Robb Quick, parents, and sister Fern Fitzgerald.
A celebration of his life will be held at the American Legion in Moorhead on July 21, 2019 from 2-4 pm. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for their care and support.
