Melvin Paul Bork, 97, of West Fargo, ND, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 in Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Melvin Bork was born on November 25, 1920 to Gust and Emma (Beglau) Bork in LaMoure County, ND. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Melvin had his early education in Ray Township Schools. He was a graduate of Edgeley High School in 1939. He joined the National Guard with the 164th Infantry for three and a half years, serving with the American Division in the South Pacific: Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Northern Solomon, and the Southern Phillipines. “It was hell living in a jungle for most of three and a half years. It was like living in an uncivilized world.” After the war, Melvin earned his Bachelor Degree in Agriculture Economics at NDSU in Fargo.
Melvin married Dorothy Zinter Kobler on August 1, 1965 at Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley, ND. Melvin attended Zion Lutheran Church for over 25 years and was very active with his time there serving as President, Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Elder. He served as the LaMoure County F.B. President for 2 terms and was a member of Ray Township for 25 years. His hobbies included bowling, fishing, and golf.
Melvin farmed for 31 years and retired in 1981. Beginning in 1984, Melvin and Dorothy spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona. In 1995 the Borks sold their home in Edgeley and bought a home in Moohread, MN, 6 blocks from their daughter and family. Melvin broke his hip in 2013 and has been unable to walk. They sold their home in Moorhead and moved to Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo in September of 2013.
Melvin and Dorothy are members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. Melvin and Dorothy loved traveling and travelled all over the world together to places such as China, Panama, Europe, and bus tours all over the U.S.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son-in-law, Douglas Schindler; grandsons, Jay (Erin) Schindler and Kent (Kristin) Schindler; great-grandchildren, Kendall, Cole, Paige Kay, and Alyssa May; sisters, Isabelle Bork and Marian Roub; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kay Schindler; parents, Gustave and Emma; siblings, Irene Sanders, Ervin Bork, and Dorothy Anderson.
A memorial service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at 2:00 PM with a visitation one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
