Mildred H. Evert

Death came peacefully to Mildred H. Evert on May 13th, 2012, in Eventide Lutheran Home following 16 years of living with Parkinson's disease.Mildred H. Brakke was born August 11, 1921 to Oscar and Clara Brink Brakke in Fargo, ND. She was the oldest of nine children raised on the family farm in the Rustad, MN community. She attended school in Rustad through the 11th grade and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1939. She attended Moorhead State Teachers College, graduating in 1941. She taught in rural schools in Alliance Township of Clay County, Deerhorn Township of Wilkin County and in Rustad. She later was a substitute teacher in Comstock where she also taught spring Kindergarten for several years.She married Delbert J. Evert on January 9, 1943. He served in the US Navy from December 1943 to March of 1945 while she continued to teach. They purchased their rural Comstock farm in 1946, where they farmed and raised their two children. Delbert died in December of 1991 and she continued to live on the farm until the fall of 2001. She resided at Linden Tree Assisted Living from 2001-2007, and at Eventide Lutheran Home since August of 2007.Mildred was baptized and confirmed in Hoff Lutheran Church in Rustad and has been an active member of Comstock Lutheran Church for the past 65 years. She was an active worker in the church's women's groups, taught Sunday School for over 40 years and served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. She served on the board of the Eventide Auxiliary and the Eventide Lutheran Home. She also contributed over 2000 hours of volunteer time to Eventide.Mildred was a full partner, cook, gardener, and "gofor" on the farm, and was active in her children and grandchildren's school activities. She was active in 4-H, Homemakers, Birthday Club, and participated in league bowling. She enjoyed travel, family gatherings and visiting with friends.She is survived by her son Jon Phyllis of Comstock; 5 grandchildren: Laura Shawn Meyer of Watkins, MN, David Sara Evert of Sabin, Christa Travis Moszer of Moorhead, Lee Evert of Barnesville, and Blake Nelson of Fargo; 6 great-grandchildren: Ace, Hank, and Bo Meyer, Braelyn and Emma Evert, and Kaden Moszer; three sisters: Helen Brakke of Fargo, Beverly Carlson of Wolverton, and Eleanor Bob Brandt of Comstock; 3 brothers: Donald Dorothy Brakke of Oxbow, Gordon Shirley Brakke of Fargo, and Norman Sheila Brakke of Everett, WA; sisters-in-law: Rhoda Brakke, Ruth Evert, and Pearl Courneya; and many nieces and nephews.Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her daughter, Carol; two brothers: Orris and Milton Bud; sister-in-law, Lorraine Brakke; brother-in-law, Carl Carlson; and 4 nephews. Mildred's family would like to thank the staff at Eventide Lutheran Home for the excellent care that they gave her.
