Mildred L. Robley, 95, of Hawley, MN, died Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Valley Care and Rehab, Barnesville, MN.
Mildred Lillian Robley was born on July 21, 1923 to Knute and Johanna (Sundstrom) Haugrud on the family farm near Pelican Rapids, MN. She was the 5th of 7 children. She was baptized and confirmed at Grove Lake Lutheran Church. She attended country school and then went on to graduate from Pelican Rapids High School. At a young age her father passed away and following graduation she stayed at home to help her mother and brothers on the family farm.
One winter she worked at Brenden’s Café. A young man named Douglas Robley started coming in for coffee and they got to know each other. They were married on March 1, 1945 at her family home. She continued to stay at home the first year while Doug was deployed with the Merchant Marines. The couple made their first home in St. Peter, MN, where sons Phillip and Steven were born. In the fall of 1949 they moved to a farm near Glyndon where daughter Karen was born. In 1952 they moved to their farm south of Hawley. Daughter Faye was born in 1956. Douglas passed away in 1997. Mildred continued living on the farm until she moved into an apartment in Hawley in 2000.
Mildred was a member of Gran Lutheran Church, where she was active in Ladies Aid, and circle, and taught Sunday School. She was an accomplished seamstress; sewing clothes, quilting, making crafts to sell, embroidery, and running her own drapery business out of her home. When the kids were young she made and sold lefse at Peterson’s Department Store in Hawley to earn money for Christmas gifts, then worked at LefseLand in Hawley. She worked cleaning houses in Fargo as well. She was a member of Rollagettes Homemaker Club. Mildred enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing and being with family.
After retirement Doug and Milly began spending winters in Apache Junction, AZ for several years. They also enjoyed trips to Everett, WA to visit family.
In 2009 Mildred moved to Hawley Senior Living where she enjoyed being a member of the bell choir, volunteering in the bandage rolling project, and enjoyed all activities offered. In January 2019 after a fall resulting in hip surgery, she moved to Valley Care and Rehab in Barnesville, MN until her death.
