Myrtle Josephine Hamre was born on April 28, 1911 to Sjur "Sam" and Bergit Froirak Hamre in McIntosh, MN. She grew up and attended country school in rural McIntosh, MN. She worked on the family farm until she was united in marriage to Leonard Hegland on April 7, 1934 in McIntosh. Later that year, they moved to Moorhead where they farmed for over 60 years. In 1953, their son, Roger joined them in partnership. Leonard died in 1969. Over the years, Myrtle worked at several places including Brownie Bakery, American Crystal Sugar, Herbst Department Store, Moorhead Manor, Western States Life, Newbury's, Woolworth's and a few other places before retiring in 1985.Myrtle enjoyed spending her winters with her two sisters in California. After her two sisters passed away, she then spent her winters at Viewpoint Park in Mesa, AZ. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, playing card, traveling, music and most importantly, spending time with family and friends. She will be missed dearly by her family and numerous friends. She is survived by one son, Roger Hegland of Moorhead, MN; three grandchildren, Michael Hegland, Rebecca Jerome Soloway and Kathy Hegland; three step-grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler and Seth Hibl; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a very special niece, Elaine Mitch Olson and their daughters, Julie and Jill; as well as several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Bennie Hamre; three sisters; Clara Johnson, Ann Birkland and Selma Hamre and two daughters-in-law, Shirley Hegland and Pat Passon.
