Myrtle Evelyn Tufton

Myrtle Evelyn (Nelson) Tufton, 102, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Eventide Nursing Home, Moorhead, MN.

Myrtle was born on April 5, 1922, in Lake Park, MN, to Ernest and Minnie (Olson) Nelson. She grew up on the Nelson family farm West of Lake Park, MN. She attended Lake Park Country School through the 8th grade and took care of the ministers’ children. She worked at Hartz grocery store in Moorhead as a cashier for a few years before being united in marriage to Orville Tufton on March 25, 1947, in Lake Park, MN. They moved to the Tufton family farm in Moorhead, MN, where they lived and farmed ever since. Orville passed away on February 28, 1997.

Myrtle was an active member at North Buffalo Lutheran Church and participated in many of the church’s organizations, such as Homemakers, Ladies Aid, WELCA, the church Circle Group, she taught Sunday School and worked as a custodian for the church for 30 years. She also enjoyed quilting, gardening, and taking care of her yard.

Myrtle is survived by her children, Larry Tufton and Kristy (Dale) Gilbraith; grandchildren, Stephanie (Trent) Oberg, Eric (Erika) Tufton, Heather Tufton, Kelsey Gilbraith, and Jason Gilbraith; great-grandchildren, Carissa and Evan Oberg, and Jacob Tufton; sister-in-law, Deloyne Nelson; and many other loving relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Orville; daughter, Linda Tufton; daughter-in-law, Corrine Tufton; parents, Ernest and Minnie; siblings, Norman Nelson, Arvid (Marlys) Nelson, Rollie (Norma) Nelson, and Dorothy (Harvey) Olson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to North Buffalo Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.

Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at North Buffalo Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. A livestream of the service will be available here on Myrtle's webpage. Burial will be at North Buffalo Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN, at a later date.
