Peter L. Backlund

Peter L. Backlund, 92, of Cummings, ND, died Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the Hillsboro Long Term Care Center, Hillsboro, ND.

Peter Leroy Backlund was born on October 16, 1925 in Hickson, ND, to Fred and Alma (Perrson) Backlund. He grew up in Hickson where he graduated from Hickson High School. Peter worked for a dairy farmer for a short time before entering the Army in 1946.  He was stationed in Japan during World War II.  Following his service, he married Donna Gilbertson on May 30, 1948.  They made their home in Harwood, ND until 1955 when they moved to the Grandin area. They moved to Cummings in 2007 where Peter lived until the past few weeks.  Peter and Donna raised four children.  Donna passed away in 2014.

Peter was a grain buyer in Grandin for most of his working life.  He worked for Gunkelman’s for 17 years before moving to Agway for another 19 years before his retirement in 1992.  Peter was a faithful member of Congregational United Lutheran in Gardner.  He was also a volunteer firefighter and very active in the Sons of Norway.  He enjoyed gardening and spending his summers at Strawberry Lake.

Peter is survived by three sons, Peter David (Joanne) Backlund, Plymouth, MN, Michael (Shelly) Backlund, Greeley, CO, and Paul (Joleen) Backlund, Hot Springs, SD; daughter, Patricia (David) Mueller, Cummings, ND; sister-in-law, Irene Backlund, Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Myrna (Robert) Mettler, Grandin, ND; four grandchildren, Kari Maanum, Justin (Mari), Abigail and Hannah Mueller.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; grandson, Brian Maanum; brothers, Carroll, Wally and Erv Backlund, and sisters-in-law, Ethel and Clarice Backlund.

A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 1:30 PM with a visitation beginning at 12:30 in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Burial will take place at Lower Wild Rice and Red River Cemetery.
