Reeta Marie (Randle) Herman, 93, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2019, in Eventide Nursing Home, Moorhead, MN. Reeta was born on April 8, 1926, to Charles and Bernice (Casmey) Randle in York, ND.
Reeta attended school in Esmond and York, ND. She graduated with honors from Mayville High School, Mayville, ND, in 1944, and attended college at Mayville State Teacher College. Before completion, she was persuaded to teach at a rural school near Portland, ND. The school sat in the middle of a plowed field when she first saw it, but at her insistence, it was moved closer to a road. It sat on the moving beams all that year. She had six pupils in six grades and learned how to play a mean Organ for the Christmas Programs. The students learned as much from each other as they did from their lessons. She thought it was a real miracle that the 8th grade student passed his State Exams. Salary was great at $125.00 per month!
Reeta went on to attend the New York Hair Dressing Academy in Fargo, ND. After passing the state boards, she worked as a beautician for a time in Mayville, ND, and then at DeLendrecie’s Beauty Salon in Fargo.
Reeta was united in marriage to Vern Herman on June 20, 1948 in Mayville, ND, Congregational Church. They lived in Fargo, ND, LaMoure, ND, and Moorhead, MN. Since Vern was always looking and finding a different house, they moved, painted, and remodeled several times. Each move helped them make new and wonderful friends, not forgetting the old ones but loving the new ones.
Reeta was active in the Mrs. Jaycees of Moorhead, served first as Secretary and later as President. She was very interested and active in community affairs. She was also a Sunday School Teacher in her high school days as well at the Congregational Church in Moorhead.
Reeta and Vern were active in square dance organizations, served as Joint Chairman of the State Convention held in Moorhead in 1969. Reeta worked in the School Food Service of Moorhead Public Schools for 17 years saying, “I don’t get paid much doing this, but I can always be home where my children are.”
At Grace Methodist Church, Reeta and Vern both felt welcome and truly found their Church Home. At Grace, she became an active member of UMW, served as Beef BBQ Chairman, Treasurer of the UMW, and Co-President at various times. Reeta was very proud to have received a Special Membership award from their group.
Reeta also did volunteer work at St. Ansgar Hospital and for the Concordia College Language Camp Program. She served on the Volunteer Board and helped deliver meals in the Home Delivery Program. She was an RSVP volunteer at various sites. She was an active member and officer of the Parkinson’s Support Group of Fargo/Moorhead. She was always proud of her husband, her children, and grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Reeta is survived by her children, Roger (Bonnie) Herman, Pam Schumaker, and Jay (Brenda) Herman; grandchildren, Patrick (Mari Berggren) Herman, Karew (Matt) Schumaker-Weiler, John (Sweda) Herman, and Kaley (Cody) Chick; great-grandchildren, Paige, Gracie, Tessa, Braden, Landon, Grace, Lane, Cooper, Kindlee, and Kora, great-great-grandchild, Fletcher; and many other loving relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bernice; loving husband, Vern; and her siblings, Myrtle Purringtron and Glen Randle.
A private memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, with a livestream available at 11:00 A.M. on her obituary page at www.wrightfuneral.com where a guestbook may also be found.
In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to Ethos Hospice.
