Richard Allan Stearns, 78, Fargo, ND, died on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 8:22am, in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Richard was born on August 22, 1941, in Detroit Lakes, MN, to H. Alton and Ruth (Benson) Stearns. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1959. He then attended Wahpeton State School of Science, graduating in 1961.
Richard married Shirley Holzhauer on April 19, 1963, in the First Baptist Church in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Richard owned and operated Stearns Auto Rebuild in Fargo, and also worked for Wanzek Construction. He retired in 2004. He was a founding member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Fargo ND.
Richard and Shirley enjoyed many adventures together, but could often be found venturing out on a good road trip just to see what they could discover. He had the heart of a farmer, they had a hobby farm for years, raising sheep and chickens. He loved to spend time at Cotton Lake, near Detroit Lakes, where his family homesteaded in 1884. He also enjoyed doing projects and having adventures with his children and grandchildren. In his retirement he discovered the hobby of woodworking.
Richard is survived by his wife, Shirley; three children (six grandchildren) Allan and his wife Caren, Cotton Lake, MN,(Autumn), Shelly and husband Edward Reeder, Fargo, ND, (Morgan, Lauren, and Lindsey) Daniel and his wife Kelly, Amity, OR (Joseph, Douglas and his wife Stephannie); a sister Audrey Kronick, Kent WA & Mesa, AZ; and a brother Glenn (Adrienne), Detroit Lakes, MN, & Mesa, AZ.
A memorial gathering will be held Lighthouse Baptist Church, 5718 36th St S, Fargo, ND 58104, on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at 1:30 pm.
Private interment will take place at Senjen Cemetery, Cotton Lake. MN.
