Richard D. Jones

Richard was born June 13, 1926 in Glyndon, MN to Richard and Caroline Stempf Jones. He grew up in Glyndon, graduating from Moorhead High School. Richard attended Naval Officers Training at the University of Illinois and later moved back to Glyndon. On June 27, 1948 he married Doris Bergquist in Audubon, MN and they raised their family on the home farm in Glyndon. Richard began farming while staying very active in the community. He was a lifelong member of the Glyndon Congregational Church. As a charter member of the Glyndon Lions Club, he was elected District Governor of 5M11 in MN and was a recipient of multiple National and International awards including the Melvin Jones Fellowship and the Helen Keller Award. He was a driving force for the Lions Quest Program in the area and across the state. Richard was a member of the Glyndon School Board and City Council, a volunteer fireman, and at one time served as the Civil Defense Coordinator. Richard was a creative entrepreneur in projects including the development of an alcohol production plant connected to the potato warehouse on his farm. In 1996 his first wife Doris passed away and on January 4, 1997 he Married Phyllis Margeson in Osseo, MN. They have remained in Glyndon for the past ten years spending their last few winters enjoying their home in T or C, New Mexico. He especially enjoyed traveling and fulfilled a lifelong dream by taking a cruise to Alaska in August and was also honored to serve as Grand Marshall in the 2006 Glyndon Days Parade. The family would like to thank Meritcare Home Care and Hospice of the Red River Valley, with special thanks for the warm and thoughtful care provided by Ellie and Greta.Richard was preceded in death by his first wife Doris; and his sister, Gertrude Rose.He is survived by his wife Phyllis; daughters, Monica Tom Millette, Marcy Bruce Matson, Janice Jones, and Joyce Dan Lubbesmeyer; step-daughters, Lynne Tim Larsen, and Sandi Chuck Weitemier; mother-in-law, Inez Meyer; brothers-in-law, Bill Phyllis Bergquist, Ralph Bergquist, Cecil Marge Bergquist, Chuck Mardella Bergquist, Melvin Meyer, Gerald Terry Meyer, Ronald Linda Meyer; sisters-in-law, Inez Haagenson, Marge Les Laffen, Carol Larry Fast, Florence Grams; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by his treasured grandchildren, Jeremy, Jesse, Adam, Toby, Amy, Leah, Mike, Brianna, Dustin, Rob, Caitlin, Scott, Samantha, Cindy, Dakota, Angie, Mike, Alex and Amanda; and great grandchildren, William, Melonie, Elly, Kylie, Phoenix, Remy, Linc, Brittany and Megan.
